Harlem Is Nowhere

Inspired by Gordon Parks and Ralph Ellison’s unpublished 1948 photo essay of the same name, Harlem Is Nowhere is a short hybrid film that blends fictional, noir-styled surreal scenes––loosely influenced by Ellison’s “The Invisible Man”––with real people, places, and events in Harlem. The story follows an unnamed, displaced photographer in Harlem on Juneteenth, as he investigates how his own Abyssinian Baptist Church, that once created Harlem into a Promised Land for the formerly enslaved Africans, is now paradoxically behind the disappearance of his home and other Black spaces in Harlem.
